British anti-lewisite

Abstract
British Anti-Lewisite (BAL) was tested for protective action against the toxicity of mapharside, neoarsphenamine, and arsphen-amine on the brain pyruvate oxidase system and on the survival rate of rats. BAL neutralized the inhibitory action of the arsenicals on the pyruvate oxidase of rat and pigeon brain and significantly reactivated the previously poisoned enzyme system. BAL was effective in causing the survival of rats after the injn. of lethal doses of mapharside or neoarsphenamine. Low concs. of BAL stimulate the brain pyruvate oxidase system.
