THE EFFECT OF HYPOPHYSECTOMY ON FETAL AND PLACENTAL GROWTH IN THE RAT

Abstract
Hypophysectomy of pregnant rats on the 12th day of gestation effected a highly significant decrease in fetal wt. and a lesser decrease in placental wt. when these were examined on the 21st day of gestation. These changes could not be accounted for by differences in maternal food intake, litter size or length of gestation since these factors were rigidly controlled. The possibility that the pituitary gland may have a direct effect on fetal growth is discussed.
