Metabolism in Diabetic Coma Produced by Alloxan

Abstract
Alloxan injected intraperit. into fasting rats in a single dose of 200 mg./kg. caused a state of diabetic coma analogous to severe human coma. In these animals plasma inorganic P and blood sugar rose, liver glycogen and total acid-soluble P decreased. An increase in liver inorganic P occurred with a concurrent fall in adenosine pyrophosphate and other organophosphates. Very large doses of insulin caused improvement in both the clinical and chemical states of comatose rats.
