Fertility and Motility of Bovine Spermatozoa in Buffered Whole Egg Extenders

Abstract
Using the split sample technic, comparisons were made between the standard 2.9 and 3.6% citrate-sulfanila-mide-yolk extenders and whole egg extenders composed of 3 parts of either a 1.9 or a 2.9% citrate buffer, containing 400 mg.% of succinylsulfathiazole and one part of blended liquid whole egg (yolk + albumen). On the basis of approx. 11,000 first- and 2d-service cows inseminated artificially with each of these 2 types of extenders, the 60* to 90-day non-returns averaged 62.3% for the citrate-sulfanilamide-yolk formulae and 61.6% for the citrate-succinylsulfathiazole-whole egg formulae. Spermatozoan motility was satisfactory in both types of extenders.
