Abstract
The author presents his own views and a review of the literature on selected problems in the field of renal diseases, with special emphasis on classification; acute glomerulonephritis (distinction from focal glom-erulitis; immunology and prognosis); hypertensive vascular disease (theories of pathogenesis; philosophy of treatment); diabetic glomerulosclerpsis (clinical features; diagnostic value of lipoid cells and casts in urinary sediment); and the functional renal diseases, including the renal hemodynamic changes in congestive heart failure (reduced glomerular filtration with normal tubular reabsorption), the tubulo- vascular syndrome in various types of shock and dehydration, and the hormonal and metabolic tubular dysfunctions of diabetes insipidus, adrenal cortical diseases and the Fanconi syndrome.
