Abstract
In the iodide tolerance test described, a small quantity of KI (20-25 [gamma] of iodide per kg. body wt.) is injected intraven. and at given time intervals thereafter, 1 cc. samples of blood are withdrawn for iodide analysis. Larger quantities of injected iodide mask the thyroid''s influence. Since the most rapid changes in iodide cone. occur during the first few mins. following the inj. of iodide, frequent blood withdrawals are required at this time. A protein-free, reducing-agent-free extract of each blood sample is prepared and analyzed for iodide content by direct utilization in a modification of the catalytic method of Sandell and Kolthoff. This procedure possesses the advantages of increased convenience and sensitivity. In addition, it measures only soluble iodides of the blood, not total blood I.
