Thyroid and Adrenal Regulation in the Steroid-Sterilized Rat

Abstract
Female rats, which had been rendered anovulatory by postnatal injection of testosterone propionate or estradiol benzoate, were subjected to 0.05% propylthiouracil (PTU) feeding or unilateral adrenalecto-my. Following treatment normal goiter developed. Although significant hypertrophy occurred after unilateral adrenalectomy, this response was below that of normal rats. The steroid-sterilized rat apparently can respond to a decrease in thyroxin or adrenal corticoid levels.
