Abstract
The ν2 fundamental of HBCl2 and DBCl2 has been observed under high resolution. A series of evenly spaced lines occurs, which has the appearance of a ⊥ band of a symmetric top molecule. Analysis of the spectra gives an approximate value for the smallest moment of inertia, from which the following molecular dimensions are calculated: B–H bond length=1.13±0.2 Å and Cl–B–Cl bond angle=119.7±3°. The position of the band center, 2616.9 cm—1, for HBCl2, has also been determined.
