Abstract
Permutation symmetry for generalized nonlinear susceptibilities is derived from the microscopic theory. It is shown that this permutation symmetry is essential for the existence of a time-averaged stored energy density or free energy for wave propagation in a nonlinear, nondissipative medium. Keywords
