THE EFFECT OF BILE IN THE INTESTINE ON THE SECRETION OF PANCREATIC JUICE

Abstract

Mellanbys theory that bile increases the absorption of secretin and therefore increases the rate of secretion of pancreatic juice could not be confirmed in 62 expts. on 3 chronic fistula dogs. Both dog bile and ox bile adjusted to various pH levels were tried. Although bile failed under these, conditions to promote secretion of pancreatic juice, it did cause marked inhibition of the secretory response to soap, peptone or HC1.
