THE EFFECTS OF CONCENTRATED SALT-POOR ALBUMIN ON THE METABOLISM AND EXCRETION OF WATER AND ELECTROLYTES IN NEPHROSIS AND TOXEMIA OF PREGNANCY 12

Abstract
The admn. of concd. salt-poor albumin resulted in a diuresis of both water and salt in 3 patients with the nephrotic syndrome and in one patient with a toxemia of pregnancy. The changes in concn. of albumin in the serum were inversely related to the increase in plasma volume and its osmotic efficiency was greater in the patients with the lowest initial concns. in the serum. There were no significant shifts of electrolytes within the body, despite changes in the volume of extracellular fluids. Glomerular filtration rate as measured by the clearance of endogenous creatinine, did not change consistently.
