The Reducing Sugars Liberated during the Bacterial Synthesis of Polysaccharides from Sucrose

Abstract

Paper chromatographic methods were used to study production of dextran from sucrose by 5 bacterial spp. and by Hehre''s enzyme prepn. Only glucose and fructose were detected and spp. producing much reducing sugar were those not able to use monosaccharides. The production of hydrolytic as well as polymerizing enzymes was indicated.
