Observations on extensive air showers V. The size spectrum of showers containing 3 × 10 6 ?3 × 10 8 particles

Abstract

A lattice arrangement of G.M. counters has been used to measure the size spectrum of showers containing 3 × 10⁶−3 × 10⁸ particles. In this region, a power law distribution is found J ( N)=9.5 × 10⁻⁵(10⁶/N)^1.88±0.15 m⁻² hr⁻¹ ster⁻¹. An independent method of measuring the number of particles in the showers gave good agreement with these figures.
