Abstract
The energy levels and wave functions of Bloch electrons in a uniform magnetic field are studied in a simple model by means of a transfer-matrix technique. Comparison is made with some previous semiclassical predictions concerning cyclotron resonance of periodic open orbits and magnetic breakdown. de Haas—van Alphen frequencies are predicted which do not correspond to the Onsager quantization of any semiclassical orbits. Keywords
