Adsorption of Oxygen on Electron-Bombarded CaF2(111) Surfaces

Abstract
The effect of oxygen adsorption was investigated on both stoichiometric and damaged CaF2(111) surfaces. Oxygen is hardly adsorbed on a stoichiometric surface, while it is easily adsorbed on electron-bombarded surfaces. For the lightly bombarded CaF2(111) surface, oxygen occupied the fluorine vacant site. However, oxygen reacted with Ca atoms aggregated on the heavily damaged CaF2(111) surface and CaO formation was observed.
