Alloxan Diabetes in Hypophysectomized Rats.

Abstract
Hypophysectomized rats were given alloxan subcut. in doses of 100-150 mg./kg. wt. If no hyperglycemia occurred, the dose was repeated or increased. Diabetes was produced in 15 of 19 rats. The diabetes produced tended to be either transitory or fluctuating. Extensive loss of 8 cells in the islets of Langerhans was noted in all animals from which satisfactory histological prepns. were obtained. Apparently the presence of the hypophysis is not necessary for the production of alloxan diabetes.Keywords
