Abstract
Respiration and aerobic lactic acid formation from glucose were measured in the chorio-allantoic membranes of chick embryos inoculated on the 11th day of incubation with mvxoma virus, membranes from uninfected embryos of the same age being used as controls. 48 hrs. after inoculation the O2 consumption of the infected membranes remained unaltered as compared with the controls; however, aerobic lactic acid formation had increased significantly. The rate of fermentation of hexosedi-phosphate to 3-phosphoglyceric acid was greater in the infected membranes than in the normal ones. This increase in glycolysis was found to be due to the activation of zymohexase in the infected chorioallantoic membranes. Keywords
