TreatmentThe surgical aspects of therapy are concerned with the restoration of the external genitalia, for the most part involving correction of the female with masculine-appearing external organs. Rarely, more extensive internal correction is required when the müllerian tubercle has failed to canalize and there is no communication with the vagina. As stated elsewhere, the masculinization of the external genitalia of the female is caused by the excessive quantities of androgens secreted by the fetal adrenal cortex, before the completion of external genital organogenesis.
