Shigella tieté

Abstract
The authors studied the cultural, biochemical and antigenic relationships of strains of the Shigella type described by De Assis, first as alkalescens II, and later as S. tiete. Their data were in complete agreement with that of De Assis, in that S. tiete appeared to be biochemically and serologically distinct from known members of the genus Shigella. Antigenic relationships to certain sero-types of Shigella were found. Colonies of S. tiete were of 2 types, clear and opaque. The clear variant was agglutin-able but the opaque variant was completely agglutinable only after boiling for one hour. The designation of new Shigella by some geographical epithet as now employed for Salmonella is suggested.
