RELATION OF THE URINE CHLORIDE RATE TO THE PLASMA CHLORIDE CONCENTRATION BEFORE AND AFTER ADMINISTRATION OF SODIUM CHLORIDE

Abstract
Expts. on rabbits showed that: Under conditions of a high rate of urine flow after water and urea administration when there is a direct relation of the rate of urea excretion to the blood urea concn. there is no uniformity in the relation of the urine chloride rate to the plasma chloride concn. This is believed to be due to fluctuations in the rate of chloride reabsorption by the renal tubules. Following the administration of NaCl when the bladder urine chloride rate becomes the major part of the renal chloride excretion there is a greater tendency for the rate of excretion of chloride in the urine to follow the plasma chloride concn. The rabbit has a chloride threshold which under these conditions averaged 494 mgm. per 100 cc. plasma for 4 expts.
