High precision de Haas-van Alphen measurements in the noble metals

Abstract
The de Haas-van Alphen frequencies for the symmetry direction orbits and the (110) plane belly turning point have been measured in copper, silver and gold with an absolute precision of better than 2 in 105 and a relative precision approaching 1 in 106. The infinite-field phases have been determined by extrapolation to an accuracy of a few hundredths of a cycle. The techniques of sample alignment and measurement of de Haas-van Alphen phase in terms of in situ 27Al NMR are discussed in some detail. There is no significant disagreement with earlier frequency measurements. The infinite-field phases agree well with the predictions of the Lifshitz-Kosevich formula, and in the case of the neck orbits resolve the ambiguities in Randles' determinations of the g factors.
