Dietary Factors Influencing Output of Bile Acids

Abstract

The mean daily endogenous cholate output (both free and conjugated) of the external biliary fistula dog with normal bromsurphthalein (BSP) clearance was approx. 100 mg./kg. of body wt. (the previous figure was 30-40 mg./kg.). In dogs secreting less cholate than 100 mg./kg., a significant correlation was found between the mean cholate deficit and the BSP retention. This decrease in cholate production is indicative of hepatic disturbance, probably due in the external biliary fistula dog to the presence of extra hepatic bile duct obstruction or an ascending hepatitis.
