FASTING KETOSIS IN THE ADRENALECTOMIZED AND CORTISONE-TREATED RAT

Abstract
Cortisone treatment inhibits ketonemia and elevates the blood sugar during a 10-day fast in normal rats. Adrenalectomized rats maintained with saline alone exhibit significantly less ketonemia and have lower blood sugars during a 4 day fast than do normal or cortisone maintained adrenalectomized rats. Adrenalectomized rats maintained with DOCA exhibit hyperketonemia and hypoglycemia during a 4 day fast. Cortisone treatment restores the ketonemia and glycemia of adrenalectomized rats to normal.
