Experimental Studies of Acute Renal Failure. I. The Protctive Effect of Mannitol

Abstract
The effects of mannitol upon renal injury was determined. Male Sprague-Dawley rats, after preparation on a low Na, acid-ash diet and dehydration for 24 hours, were injected with methemoglobin prepared from out-dated human blood (2 gm/kg). Mannitol was given in a dose of 0.3 gm/kg immediately after. Death from renal failure occurred in 1.1% of the mannitol treated and 93.5% of the control animals.
