Synthesis of Vitamins by Intestinal Bacteria

Abstract
Biotin, riboflavin, nicotinic acid and thiamine are produced in varying amts. by pure cultures of Escherichia coli, Proteus vulgaris, Bac-terium aerogenes, Alkaligenes jecalis, Bacillus mesentericus and Bacillus vulgatus except that P. vulgaris fails to produce nicotinic acid and B. mesentericus fails to produce biotin in detectable quantities. Far less biotin is always produced than of the other vitamins. Evidently these bacteria synthesize B vitamins in excess of their requirements. After 111 hr. the filtrate contains 30-40% of the 4 vitamins produced by Bact. aerogenes.
