Abstract
The chromatographic method of Whistler and Durso for separating sugars on a charcoal-Celite column was checked for its applicability to plant extracts. Of the 3 fractions isolated, the monosaccharide fraction contained no disaccharides or trisaccharides. The disaccharide fraction contained a small monosaccharide and trisaccharide contamination while the trisaccharide fraction contained a small disaccharide contamination. Carbon-14-labeled raffinose was isolated and crystallized.
