FURTHER STUDIES ON THE METABOLISM OF THERAPEUTIC DOSES OF NATURAL ESTROGENS IN HUMAN SUBJECTS*

Abstract
Studies of the fractionation and photometric estimation of urinary estrogens were made following the admn. of therapeutic doses of the natural estrogens to (a) a normal human [male], (b) a bilaterally orchiectomized human [male] and (c) a human [male] with extensive liver damage. The nature and amt. of the estrogens excreted is influenced by (a) the vehicle in which the hormone is administered (b) the route of admn., and (c) the nature of chemical conjugation of the administered hormone. In the presence of extensive liver damage, the reversible conversion of estradiol to estrone is not impaired but conversion of either to estriol is negligible and the estrogens are excreted in the free form.
