TREATMENT OF AMEBIASIS WITH ATABRINE COMBINED WITH CARBARSONE

Abstract
In vitro expts. suggested amebicidal action of atabrine. In 10 patients ulcerations of the lower bowel were healed after use of atabrine in dosage of 0.1 g., 4 times daily for 15 days. Persistence of cysts of Endamoeba histolytica in cultures after rather prolonged exposure to atabrine indicated that atabrine should be accompanied by a drug capable of eliminating the cysts of the organism. Consequently in the 10 patients descr. above the atabrine course was followed by a course of carbarsone in usual dosage. An additional 15 cases were treated with the 2 agents simultaneously. The failure rate with the combined therapy was 12%.Keywords
