Abstract
Dielectric and structural measurements are presented on a glass containing crystals of SrTi03 ∼ 5 μm in size and ∼50% by volume. A sharp peak in the dielectric constant at 33 K is reported, and is interpreted as a stress-induced transition to an antiferroelectric phase of symmetry lower than tetragonal. Considerable dielectric activity is also reported between 0.005 and 0.1 K. Two applications of this material are briefly discussed: A magnetic-field insensitive, low-temperature capacitance thermometer; and a sensitive low-temperature infrared detector.
