Abstract
The fundamental concepts and objectives of the Renormalization Group approach to critical phenomena are introduced in the context of structural phase transition theory. The nature of the information yielded by the methods of the Renormalization Group is illustrated with a review of its predictions for the dependence of critical behaviour upon the range and symmetry of the interatomic interactions characterizing the phase transition. Keywords
