Abstract
Hypophysectomy by a new intraorbital approach was performed on 8 rabbits 1/2-3 hrs. following coitus, and on the 3rd, 14th, and 25th days of pregnancy. Adequate controls were provided for each group. The exps. show that the hypophysis is essential for ovulation, for the implantation of the ovum, for the life of the corpus luteum, and for the continuation of pregnancy. Rabbits operated on in mid-pregnancy passed necrotic fragments on the 5th-10th postoperative days. Those hypophysectomized on the 24th-26th days aborted after 48 hrs. Urine of pregnancy caused ovulation in the absence of the hypophysis. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
