THE MAINTENANCE OF A NORMAL SERUM CALCIUM BY THE PARATHYROID GLAND IN NEPHRECTOMIZED DOGS

Abstract
A decrease in the serum Ca conc, amounting to about 50% in 72 hrs. was observed in nephrectomized-parathyroidec-tomized dogs. No similar decrease was observed in nephrec-tomized controls. The serum inorganic P and NPN were markedly elevated in both groups. The evidence presented indicates that the parathyroid gland exerts an influence on Ca metabolism that is independent of the kidneys.
