The Destructive Effect of Citrate Vs. Lactate Ions on Rats' Molar Tooth Surfaces, in Vivo

Abstract
Citrate and lactate buffers of pH 5.5 to 7.2 were given as drinking fluids to young growing rats. After 119 to 151 days the lingual tooth surfaces of the rats drinking citrate buffers showed localized decalcifications similar to erosions on human teeth, particularly at the lower pH levels. The rats drinking lactate buffers or water showed no such decalcification.
