Abstract
Giant amoeboid organisms can be isolated from soil by the use of certain bacteria on nutrient agar as a food supply. 92 strains of bacteria were tested as food for L. reticulata. The bacteria were of 3 types: (1) those completely eaten, (2) those partly eaten, and (3) those eaten slightly on rare occasions or not at all. Not all of the cultures of type (1) led to the production of cysts. The red, violet, and green bacteria tested were not suitable for food.
