Abstract
The angular distributions for the scattering of negative pions by liquid deuterium were measured, using the 119-Mev pion beam of the Chicago cyclotron and scintillation counters. The values of the nonexchange scattering differential cross section in the laboratory system for angles of 45°, 90°, and 135° are 8.50±0.31, 5.31±0.20, and 8.36±0.29 in units 1027 cm2 steradian1. The differential cross sections for the production of photons at the same angles and in the same units are 2.20±0.27, 2.41±0.28, and 3.40±0.38. The total cross section from transmission measurements is (132±7)×1027 cm2. These values are somewhat less than the sum of the previously measured cross sections for positive and for negative pions on hydrogen.
