FURTHER STUDIES ON THE REFRACTORY STATE DEVELOPED FOLLOWING REPEATED INJECTIONS OF ADRENAL EXTRACT1

Abstract
Refractoriness to the Na retention factor develops after repeated intraven. or intraperit., but not subcut., injs. of an adrenal extract from a sp. other than that of the subject. The condition may also be produced by inj. of the pseudoglobulin fraction from the serum of an animal rendered refractory. This state is developed in adrenalectomized animals or in patients with Addison''s disease as readily as in the normal animal. The evidence indicates that the refractoriness is an immune reaction.
