Increase in Influenzal Meningitis

Abstract

AN increase in Haemophilus influenzae meningitis admissions has occurred at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh during the past three decades. No evidence has been found that it is due to increased referral to this hospital, improved laboratory methods or change in age distribution.There has been a rise of approximately 50 per cent in total admissions during the past 25 years. The increase in admissions due to H. influenzae meningitis, however, has been much greater: over 400 per cent during the same period (Fig. 1).
