Viruses and the Pathogenesis of Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
The etiology of juvenile-onset insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in man remains elusive. This review presents evidence supporting a viral pathogenesis of diabetes in man and experimental animal models and the possible relationship of viral mechanisms to genetic and immunologic factors. [Mumps virus, Coxsackie virus, rubella virus, encephalomyocarditis virus and foot-and-mouth disease virus and other viruses are discussed.].
