The enzymic hydrolysis of steroid conjugates. 2. Hydrolysis of steroid conjugates in urine

Abstract
The application of a sulfatase and [beta]-glucuronidase extract of molluscan origin to the hydrolysis of urinary steroid conjugates was described. The effect of varying conditions of pH, time and enzyme concentration on the rate of hydrolysis of the conjugates was studied, and the influence of some urinary inorganic inhibitors on the rate of enzymic hydrolysis indicated. Amounts of neutral 17-oxo- steroids released by enzymic and acid hydrolysis are compared. Partition chromatography of urinary neutral 17-oxosteroids after both enzymlie and acid hydrolysis was carried out; a difference in the distribution of various chromatographic fractions depending on the method of hydrolysis was noted.
