ESR Analysis of Pb3+ Ions in Y3Ga5O12

Abstract
Trivalent lead impurity ions 5d106s1 have been detected by electron-spin resonance (ESR) to occur in diamagnetic garnet crystals of Y3 Ga5 O12 which were grown from a PbO-PbF2 based flux. From the observed weak anisotropy of the Pb207 hyperfine interaction, it could be positively established that the Pb3+ ions occupy the dodecahedral sites in the garnet lattice. Trivalent lead impurity ions were also found to occur in the other diamagnetic garnet hosts, Y3 Al5 O12, Lu3 Ga5 O12, and Lu3 Al5 O12.
