Cytology and Microchemistry of Nuclei in Developing Seed of Echinocystis macrocarpa

Abstract

The development of the seed, similar to other cucurbits, is outlined. Cells and nuclei of endosperm and nucellus in full-grown but unripe seeds are visible to the naked eye. Largest nuclei measure 150-200 [mu] in diam. Nucleoli are extremely variable in number, size and outline. Nuclear reticulum is digested by trypsin but disintegration is inhibited by lanthanum chloride. Reaction of Fehling''s soln. points to reducing substances within nucleus. Volume of water removable on dehydration amounts to 60-80%. Nuclear structural materials may increase 3558-fold.
