Teliospore Morphology of Some Smut Fungi. II. Light Microscopy

Abstract
In spores of Neovossia indica, N. horrida and N. brachypodii 3 wall layers, the perisporium (also known as the sheath), the episporium, and the endosporium were distinguished. In N. indica the young spores bear an apiculus which arises from the episporium and not the perisporium. The episporium is adorned with thick truncate projections in N.. indica and N. horrida. An individual projection in the former is composed of 2 double strands which are cemented together by 2 cross bands at or near the apex. In N. indica the endosporium is thick and lamellate, whereas in the other 2 species it is devoid of lamellae.
