STUDIES ON THE PHYSIOLOGY OF THE LIVER

Abstract
Following ligation of the common bile duct and extirpation of the gall bladder in dogs, there is an immediate progressive increase in bilirubin content of the blood. Using the spectro-photometric method for determination of bile pigment, the authors found that with increase in bile pigment content of blood in the general circulation, blood taken from the hepatic veins contained more bile pigment than that from the hepatic artery or portal vein at the same time. This appears to be definite evidence of the addition of bile pigment to the blood by the liver.
