Abstract
The shift of the band center of the and impurities in different alkali halide matrices can be well understood in terms of Buckingham's theory if one considers that the lattice gets locally distorted near the impurity. The amount of lattice distortion needed to explain the shifts of the band centers agrees well with that obtained on the basis of different specific models.
