Abstract
A semiclassical theory for the tunnelling of a magnetic ion in a crystal field and an applied magnetic field is proposed. The tunnel splitting energy Delta E0 of the ground state is calculated as a function of the anisotropy constants, the magnetic field and the spin quantum number s. The results also demonstrate the failure of the coherent-state representation of path integrals for spin systems. Keywords
