Abstract
Experience derived from operative treatment of 292 patients with verified pituitary adenoma, occurring between 1929 and 1947, is reviewed. The only comparable follow-up study in the literature is Cushing''s series of 338 pituitary adenoma cases reported by Henderson in 1939. The histological diagnoses were as follows[long dash]232chromophobe, 55 acidophil, 2 basophil and 3 malignant adenomata. Ophthalmic symptoms are discussed, as well as the pre- and post-operative alterations in sexual functions, blood sugar, basal metabolism and blood pressure. The effect on endocrine functions is complex due to the multiplicity of influencing factors, such as sex and age of patient, tumor type, extent of tumor, etc. Keywords
