Successful Allogenic Bone Marrow Transplantation in Man: Chimerism, Induced Specific Tolerance and Possible Anti-Leukemic Effects

Abstract
A 26-year-old man with acute lymphoblastic leukemia was treated by chemotherapy and total body irradiation (800r) with Co60. After aplasia of the marrow he was given bone marrow transfusions from relatives. Myeloid restoration began in 2 weeks. In 6 months nearly all of the erythrocytes belonged to the phenotype of 1 of the male donors. A few leukocytes were of the female type. After a remission he died 20 months after the irradiation, of acute pulmonary congestion complicating encephalitis.
