EXTRACTIVES FROM POPULUS TREMULOIDES HEARTWOOD: THE TRITERPENE ALCOHOLS

Abstract
The 'unsaturated alcohol fraction' from P. tremuloides heartwood (R. A. Abramovitch, R. G. Micetich, and S. J. Smith, Tappi, 46, 37 (1963)) has been found to contain α- and β-amyrin, butyrospermol, 24-methylenecycloartanol, lupeol, and α-amyrenonol. Some aspects of the infrared and n.m.r. spectra of these compounds are discussed and the suggestion is made that the tritisterols and orysterols may actually be C31H52O triterpenes containing a cyclopropane ring.
