Abstract
A derivative of glutathione was isolated from calf-lens extracts and identified as the thiosulfate (GSSO3H) corresponding to glutathione (GSH); the identification is based on comparison of the physical and chemical properties of the material from the lens with those of synthetic GSSO3H. Lens extracts catalyze the synthesis of GSSO3H from glutamic acid, the thiosulfate (CySSO3H) derived from cysteine and glycine. The isolation of GSSO3H from lens extracts was accomplished by ion-exchange chromatography; elution was effected with pyridine formate buffers, which are volatile and do not react with ninhydrin.
