Latitude effect and atmospheric attenuation of the cosmic ray nucleon component

Abstract
The latitude effect has been studied by means of a shipboard neutron monitor during 12 passages of the so-called knee. The latter remained in a fixed position (46.0° ± 1.0° N, 7° W) between Oct. 1956 and Feb. 1959. Above the knee there exists a plateau due to the atmospheric attenuation of the nucleon component. The horizontal part of this plateau extends to a threshold rigidity of 3.2±0.5 GeV/c. DOI: 10.1111/j.2153-3490.1962.tb01348.x
